In the Avenged Sevenfold DVD titled All Excess, Zacky said that before he entered Avenged Sevenfold, he had become a member of a punk rock band called MPA or Mad Porno Action that failed to achieve success. Then it Zacky and M. Shadows formed Avenged Sevenfold.

Zacky learn how to play guitar when he was thirteen years old. He taught himself. First guitar he used was his father's guitar.
